Economic presenter visits Seymour Taylor & Chiltern Consultancy

On Friday 18 November, Seymour Taylor and our Financial Advisers, Chiltern Consultancy had the great pleasure of working with Justin Urquhart Stewart, co founder of Seven Investment Management (7IM). In between presenting on a breakfast radio station and being interviewed on BBC World News, Justin took the time to speak to our highly regarded clients and business contacts over two seminars.

The day started off at our office on London Road, High Wycombe, with Justin presenting to a few selected representatives from local firms of solicitors over breakfast, with an update on the Trustees Act and its full implications.

Having trained as a barrister, Justin discussed the evaluation of mandates and the solicitors’ duty of care.

Needless to say Justin reinforced the necessity for professionals to verify that their clients are being advised correctly regarding their investments, if they, as solicitors, are taking on the responsibility (and potential liability) of Trustee. He stressed the key is for processes to be in place for beneficiaries to receive that which Trustees (and their Investment advisers) are obliged to receive.

Widely recognised for his ‘lucky’ red braces and socks, Justin continued the day with a lunch seminar at Adams Park Conference Centre. The audience of more than 30 businesses enjoyed not only good food but Justin’s witty but instructive view on the current world economy. Justin really did underline the necessity to continue to develop the investment markets. He is very skilled in breaking down many of the barriers businesses and investors face, but presents in simple terms.

Justin explained that we are a nation of small businesses, “if we create the right environment, they will drive employment”. His view is that the UK has a deficit problem, not a debt problem. A ten year cycle is what we are experiencing, irrespective of who our leaders are, we can’t change that, but it’s not all doom and gloom.

Whilst touching on subjects as diverse as politicians, the Eurozone, news commentators, housing issues and the job market, Justin explained that the core issue seems to be consumer confidence, which is the worst it has been since the 1980s. To get the fundamental elements of our economy unstuck, there needs to be increased trust to spend in markets. Justin expressed his view that Britain is damaged but not doomed and we can’t grow the economy by cutting everything.

Finally, Justin felt that “recovery doesn’t happen instantly”, but that it will be about “longer, slower growth”.

The delivery on Justin’s professional view of the investment world, summed up by a member of the audience was “an entertaining jaunt through the economic jungle - but packed with useful facts.”

Just a couple of other comments fed back were: “Overall a quality event.” “Excellent run through of many key issues.” “The greatest strength of the event was Justin’s un-doubtable experience and deep understanding of the markets.”

“We have had the privilege of Justin presenting for Seymour Taylor in the past and working with him again for the day was fantastic” said Simon Turner, Managing Director of Seymour Taylor. “The economic seminar was very well received and the audience came away with an enlightened view of the current financial climate”. Simon continued, “Having someone of Justin’s calibre presenting, shows our clients the high level of service we and our partners at Chiltern Consultancy provide.”

Simon and all of the Directors of Seymour Taylor and Chiltern Consultancy thank Justin very much for his time, we had an enjoyable day and look forward to inviting him to future gatherings.
